IT Asset Management, SAM for Clients & Datacenter

USU strengthens IT security and lowers costs at Metro AG

The challenge

As a global wholesale leader, METRO AG needed a complete view of its decentralized IT infrastructure.

This included everything from hardware and software inventory to user and license data. Their goal was ambitious: Implement a central IT asset management (ITAM) solution to optimize software usage, assess risk, improve compliance and increase operational efficiency across more than 30 countries. Until then, data collection was manual and fragmented—making it difficult to get consistent insights or act strategically.

The solution

To create transparency, METRO launched a multi-phase project starting with USU Software Asset Management.

The IT Asset Inventory module, powered by USU’s partner Raynet, gathered high-quality inventory data from various source systems. More than 60 custom reports were created, delivering instant insights into country-specific inventory levels, Oracle deployments and more. At the same time, METRO integrated USU’s SAM for Clients & Datacenter module. This allowed them to connect critical systems from major software providers like SAP, Microsoft and Oracle. For the first time, the team could make informed, data-driven decisions about software optimization, compliance and risk management.

The result

Today, METRO has a centralized overview of all IT assets and software usage—accessible to all internal teams worldwide.

The solution automatically generates compliance reports for top vendors, significantly reducing manual effort and audit risk. The ability to detect unused licenses and redeploy them means smarter software investments and lower costs. Beyond financial gains, the project strengthened IT security. The team enriched asset data with end-of-life and vulnerability information, helping identify outdated systems like unsupported Windows versions. This holistic view forms the basis of a "technology catalog" used for group-wide risk assessments. The project’s success was driven by collaboration. Finance, Legal, Governance, Purchasing and HR all played key roles. “Rolling out IT asset management in a global organization is never easy,” said Daniel Fink, USU Sales Manager, “that’s why partnership. Communication and shared motivation were essential from day one."

"Thanks to the targeted and always trustworthy cooperation with our partners USU and Raynet, we were able to productively set up an overall ITAM solution that provides us with a full overview of valuable IT data across all METRO companies in over 30 countries at all times. This allows us to use our IT resources much more efficiently.”
